Notre Dame continues a strong week of 2018 recruiting as offensive tackle Cole Mabry out of Brentwood, Tennessee has committed to the Fighting Irish.

Cole is one of the most recent offers sent out by the Fighting Irish staff. He just received his offer this past weekend during his visit for Junior Day. Obviously a big impression was made by Harry Hiestand, Brian Kelly, and the rest of the staff since Cole has decided to publicly commit to Notre Dame just a couple of days after the conclusion of his visit.

Cohort

Cole chose the Irish over other offers from Memphis, Indiana, Colorado State, and Cincinnati. Sounds like the Irish got their man before his recruitment really took off.

Highlights

Cole’s highlights show a really good athlete with good feet. He’s also a very nasty, physical guy who plays to the whistle and works hard at putting the opposition on his back on every play. He’s listed at 6-6/265 pounds right now. And if he can keep his athleticism while adding another 40-50 pounds, he has the potential to be an elite lineman. This is a high-upside pickup, and it’s easy to see why Harry Hiestand likes Cole so much. It’s significantly harder to see why Cole is only a mid-level 3-star at this point in time. I fully expect him to shoot up the rankings in the coming months.

Impact

Cole Mabry’s commitment brings Notre Dame up to nine total commitments. This is the first commitment for Notre Dame along the offensive line, and just the third on the offensive side of the ball for a class which is ranked 2nd in the country by the 247 Sports Composite. This is a very strong start for the Irish, and they’ve been on a roll over the past few days with commitments from defensive backs Kalon Gervin, Derrik Allen, and now Cole on the offensive line.

As with almost all offensive lineman that have signed with Notre Dame over the past handful of years, a redshirt season will be in order for Cole. It’ll be interesting to see how well he bulks up over the next couple of years, because he won’t be able to see the field until he does. He’s got really nice upside, though, and it’s possible we see him competing for a starting position somewhere down the line.
