Today marks our 28th Notre Dame football uniform concept and the second from the Clint Glazer throwback collection. Last week’s was an homage to the late 1930’s as Notre Dame sought its way in a world long without Knute Rockne. Our design today is taken from a couple decades later.

1959 was a landmark year for Notre Dame uniforms. We saw the infamous upside down “nuclear” shamrock, UCLA stripes, and for the first time ever the Irish wore a third alternate jersey. For the 1950’s the team had been wearing green at home and white with green trim on the road. For 1959 they kept the white for the road, moved the green to an alternate, and switched back to navy blue for home games.

The cool thing about the blue jersey was that it featured a 9-stripes on the shoulder instead of the more familiar 3 stripes. The next season, a rightward facing shamrock donned the helmets for the first time ever and the white road jersey switched back to blue and gold instead of white with green.

Even better, the “new” road jersey for 1960 carried over the 9-stripes from the home jersey to create the throwback you see here today. It’s sharp and classy.
